Curtain Pole Fitting in Birmingham
Curtain Pole and Blind Fitting in Birmingham, done properly in one visit with a tidy finish. Evening visits until 9pm, Monday to Friday. Call for a quote.

Everyone has a window that has been waiting months for its curtains, a blind still in its box, or a pole propped up in the corner. Thompson’s - Local Handyman Services l Odd Job Man is a Birmingham handyman based in B6, and we cover curtain pole fitting, blinds and curtain tracks across Birmingham, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield. Evening visits run until 9pm, Monday to Friday, so you don’t need to take time off work. If you have several small jobs lined up, we can quote them together and tackle the lot in one visit. The nagging list finally gets crossed off.
Understanding the Job
Ever tried holding a drill against the wall while a bracket slips out of level? Hanging a pole sounds simple until then. The brackets have to sit level and at the right height, they need spacing so the pole doesn’t sag, and they must go into something that will carry the weight of the curtains.
Blinds follow the same logic. They need to sit square in the recess or on the frame, or they’ll rise crooked and rub on one side. Getting this right means checking the wall or frame first, marking carefully, choosing the right fixings and testing the finished job. A job done properly starts with that groundwork.
If your curtain pole fell out of the wall, the pole is rarely the problem. The fixing has usually pulled free from the plaster or board behind it. We repair the damaged spot, or move the bracket slightly, and refit it with a fixing suited to that wall.
Curtain Poles and Tracks
Which looks better, a pole or a track? It depends on the room. A pole is the classic choice: visible, so it can be a feature, and it works well with eyelet, tab-top or pencil-pleat curtains. A track sits more discreetly, often fixed to the ceiling or the wall above the window. Tracks suit modern rooms, and they’re the usual choice where a curtain has to curve around a corner.
If you’ve bought a set and would rather not risk the wall, leave it to us. We measure and mark the bracket positions, fix them level and check that the curtains will clear radiators, window sills and handles. Long poles need a centre support so they don’t bow under heavy fabric. We also make sure curtains can be pulled fully clear of the glass, so you don’t lose daylight.
Wall-mounted poles sit well when the window has enough space around it. Ceiling-fixed tracks can add the look of height to a room. Unsure which suits your window? No two properties are the same, so we can talk it through when we look at the job.
Roller, Roman and Venetian Blinds
Blinds are fiddlier than they look, and a small error shows up every time you raise them.
- Roller blinds are the simplest and neatest. They need accurate bracket placement so the fabric rolls straight and doesn’t drift to one side.
- Roman blinds are heavier, with a batten and cords. They need a solid fixing and careful levelling so the folds stack evenly.
- Venetian blinds have a headrail that carries the full weight of the slats, so the fixing must be secure, and the blind must hang straight for the tilt mechanism to work properly.
Whether a blind goes inside the recess or outside it on the frame or wall changes the look and how much light gets round the edges. We’ll explain the trade-off before drilling.
Already bought your blinds? We’ll fit them, and several can go up in the same visit. That suits anyone who has measured and ordered a set for the whole house. A landlord who wants every window consistent between tenancies will find it handy too.
Bay Windows
Bay windows are the ones people tend to put off. There are several angles to work around, and a single pole won’t do the job.
A bay can be dressed with a purpose-made bendable track, a set of joined pole sections with corner connectors, or separate poles or blinds on each pane. The right choice depends on the shape of the bay and how you want to use it. If you have a window seat, you’ll want curtains that clear it.
Been staring at an awkward bay and not sure where to start? We check the angles, mark each bracket position and make sure the pole or track follows the shape cleanly. Corners and joins need support, because that’s where weight concentrates and where a fitting is most likely to sag.
Where the bay has a fixed or curved ceiling track, we make sure it runs smoothly so curtains glide round without catching. Done well, the finished bay looks deliberate and balanced rather than bodged.
Fixings for Plasterboard Walls
Plasterboard is a thin sheet with a hollow space behind it. A plain screw and wall plug won’t grip well, which is the usual reason a pole or blind suddenly comes away.
It all comes down to using the right fixing for the wall. Where there’s a timber stud or solid support behind the board, we aim for that. Where there isn’t, we use fixings made for hollow walls, such as ones that spread behind the board to share the load. The weight of the curtain, the length of the pole and how often it will be used all affect the choice.
Heavy lined curtains, a wide window or a pole that has already come down once? That’s where this matters most. The benefit is peace of mind: a pole that stays put and doesn’t leave a bigger hole each time it fails.
If we find the wall behind is crumbling or damaged beyond a simple repair, we will tell you plainly and explain what we’d suggest before carrying on.
Who Needs a Hand With This
- Homeowners who have just moved in and want privacy and a finished look.
- Renters who need a pole or blind fitted neatly. Check your tenancy agreement or ask your landlord before drilling.
- Landlords who need windows dressed or repaired between tenancies and want it done quickly and neatly.
- Anyone with a collapsed pole, a blind that will not hang straight or a set of curtains waiting to go up.
We can also add other small jobs to the same visit, such as flat pack assembly, TV mounting, shelves or small fence repairs.
Step by Step
- Tell us what you have. Describe the windows and whether you have bought the poles or blinds. A photo helps.
- We look at the job. We check the walls, measure up and discuss the fixings and the finished look.
- You get a quote. We give it in writing for the job or the whole list of jobs, so you know where you stand before we begin.
- We mark and fix. Positions are measured and levelled, and the brackets or headrails are fixed with the right fixings for the wall.
- We hang and test. Curtains and blinds go up, and we check they move smoothly, sit straight and clear the sill.
- We tidy up. The area is cleared and any dust is swept away.
What You Gain
- A secure fixing that stays on the wall, not one that works loose in a few weeks.
- A level, tidy finish that makes the whole room look finished.
- Time back, because we do the measuring, drilling and clearing up.
- Several jobs in one visit, so you are not arranging separate appointments for small tasks.
- Straight advice if something needs a different approach or a trade we don’t cover.
What Affects the Price
We don’t quote a figure without seeing the job. The cost depends on how many windows there are, how large and heavy the poles, tracks or blinds are, and what kind of wall they are going into. Bay windows, ceiling fixings and repairs to damaged plaster take longer than a standard fitting. A single pole will be quicker than a whole house of blinds.
When we look at the job, we check the walls, talk through the options and give you a clear quote. If you have a list, send it all over and we’ll price it together.
Jobs We Do Not Take On
We say plainly what is outside our work and who to call instead:
- Electrical work, including wiring for motorised blinds: call an electrician.
- Gas work: call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Plumbing repairs: call a plumber.
- Locksmith work, such as window or door lock problems: call a locksmith.
- Rubbish removal: call a waste removal firm.
If a wall looks structurally unsound, we will say so and suggest you get a builder to look at it before anything is fixed to it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Send us the list and we'll quote it as a whole. Curtain poles, blinds, shelves, flat pack assembly and TV mounting can often be done in one trip, which saves separate visits. If any job on the list needs another trade, we'll tell you at the start.
It depends on the number of windows, the size and weight of what is being fitted and the wall it is going into. We don't give prices without seeing the job. Tell us what you need, or ask us to look at it, and we'll give you a clear quote.
Yes. The usual cause is a fixing that has pulled out of plaster or plasterboard. We repair the damage or reposition the bracket, then refit the pole with a fixing suited to the wall, so it holds the weight of the curtains.
Check your tenancy agreement or ask your landlord first, as drilling isn't always allowed. If you have permission, we can fit it neatly. Landlords can also book us to fit or repair poles and blinds between tenancies.
We do not do electrical, gas, plumbing repairs, locksmith work or rubbish removal. For those, you'll need the relevant tradesperson. If a job on your list falls into any of these, we'll tell you at the start and carry on with the rest.
